Frog and Toad Are Friends

Spring

Dear boys and girls in Surf and Penguin Clubs,

My second graders will read the same story as you are reading but we will be reading the English version. I have a copy of the book to send to you. I hope you will like it. It is our present for our dear friends at Rinkan Elementary School.

I will be asking my students some questions as we read the story. I would like to ask you the same questions. We want you to talk to us about the book so that we can all understand it better. Would you like to do that?

Here are some questions for you:

  • Frog and Toad are best friends. How do you know that? Do you have a best friend? Tell us how you help your best friend.
  • Could this story really happen? How do you know?
  • Frog tells Toad that it is Spring. What two things happen that make Frog know it is Spring?
  • Toad answers Frog, "I am not here." Why is this funny?
  • Why didn't Toad want to get out of bed? Do you ever want to stay in bed? Tell us about it.
  • Frog gives Toad some reasons why he should get out of bed. What does Frog say they can do together?
  • Toad has been asleep since November. It is now April in the story. How many months has Toad been sleeping?
  • Toad wants to sleep until 'half past May.' What does he mean?
  • Frog tricks Toad into thinking that it is May already. How does he do that?
  • Did you like this story? Tell us why.
  • Boys and girls, *we* can be best friends, too. My class at Delmar and your class at Rinkan can be best of friends, don't you think? How can we help each other as friends do?

Isamu,

Please ask some questions for my children and we will try to answer them for you this week. I will probably take us a week to answer all these questions and write answers for you since my time in the computer lab with my students is only 30 minutes a day. ...but we will work hard!

Warm hugs from all of us,
Patti
