I hope some of you are reading kidleadrm and we'll be able to talk off line with Marisol and Jaime who were planning to have their first experience with IRC and are somewhat dissapointed. They just sent a msg to kidproj which I am repeating following this msg. Hello: We are Jaime Loo and Marisol Susaya and we study at Wiese school for deaf, we are deaf. We are going to attend a hearing school next year. Jaime is 4th grade and Marisol is 5th grade. Marisol: I like to play volleyball, the beach and walk around. Jaime: I like football(soccer) and basketball, walk around I have to study hard because it's harder for us deaf to match the people who can hear at school. I hope I will have many friends at the hearing school next year, I will have to study very hard. We have learned to talk and read lips while learning everything else at school, that is why it took us longer to get to 4 and 5 grade but the nice thing is we will be as any other hearing people in the future because we are able to read their lips and understand what they say without need of sign language. --------------------------------------------------------------------- From Matthew in Maryland: Hello, My name is Matthew. I like going to school with my hearing friends. My class is learning sign language to talk to me. I am in first grade. I like school. I am 7 years old. I am deaf. My favorite movie is Beauty and the Beast. I like trucks. I like baseball. I like to eat hot dogs, hamburgers, and pizza. Please write back. Bye Matthew Delmar Elementary School ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Hello Mathew in Delmar ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello Mathew: We are Jaime and Marisol and we are deaf too. At our school everybody is deaf but we study just for a few years here until we learn lip reading and how to talk, then we go to regular schools. We will go to a regular school next year. I like pizza too (Jaime). Your school name (Delmar) in spanish means from the sea. Are you close to the sea? Why did they gave your school that name? Translation: Hello friends. Do you have many factories where you live? Are they large? Are there many cops? Does everybody have a job? We don't have large factories in Peru and many people are jobless. We don't have enough policemen. Jaime: I think the cops work very well because they capture the crooks and the terrorists and protect people. Marisol: I don't think they do a good work but am not sure about it. Here the school year is finishing, we attend only till mid december. In december it will be Christmas. I (Marisol) like Christmas because of the many gifts but this year I don't think there will be too many because toys are too expensive and dad and mom don't have plenty of money. (A=Antila) Me TOO!!!! *** A-MarkH has left channel #KIDCLUB heather: do you write boks on learning sign language?where would one go to learn it? we have a teacher at delmar who does braille for a blind student there That could be interesting! *** Meike (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #kidclub hi where are you from UNICEF believes that all children have equal rights, so children with disabilities should have as many opportunities as other children... Heather: I have a blind friend and he uses a radio a lot to talk to people over seas. Fiona: how old are you? I'm 12 About how many per cent of the world's children are disabled? How can disabled people benefit from computers? Racheal: i am 15. That sounds a great idea, maybe we should develop opportunities like this for more kids... all:can anyone meet us at 15:00-16:00 GMT on Tuesday? The computer "read" everything that appeared on the screen. we are doing a demo at the university Mikael: I think it could possibly help them learn faster thanks Mikael *** Signoff: JoM (Leaving) a_mikael: I think that a blind person could learn how to type and then have the computer linked to a printer that can print braille. Must go now! Bye all!!! oops... *** Signoff: MikeW (Leaving) where are from meike? Rachel: Isn't it ECT (East Coast Time) in the east parts? oops where are you from What do you think could be done to improve the facilities for disabled children in your area We hafe no disabled kids at school Antti I'm not sure I live in Michigan What kind of benefits do handicapped people get in your country because of their disability? Would a kid in a wheelchair be able to get around your school Meike at the university we buy lap tops for the handicaped students to work at home De there is a school for blind kids in Groningen In Michigan, we have ramps and parking spaces for them and things like that, some 2 story schools have elevators kristi: do they have modem contact with the school? yes we do We have a lift for disabled children at our school(louise) our school busses have a lift for handicapped kids Usually when I go to school I say a special bus for handicaps *** Signoff: Antti (logout....) so do we I mean see thats ok Heather: A kid in a wheelchair can in our school, no thresholds For people who are visually impaired, we have large 3D letters for room numbers... One thing we dont do at our school is provide transport to school(Louise) *** Signoff: Rachel (Bad link?) That is a very good idea Rob S] RobS: good! there are many small things we can do to improve for disabled. in our elevators they have braille on the nubers for the blind we have extra large bathrooms for the handicapped We are now required to provide everything in schools for disabled people, like textbooks in audio format or doorways which can accept wheelchairs... so do we Some of these things are so easy to do,it is just that peopole do not think of them we have ramps instead of steps forwheelchairs Is Ann Lawrence with you Patti no she is at a state championship field hockey game but we will take notes for her Thankyou! In Groningen at the streetcornere thre there are almost everywhere slopes in the pavementstep (?) Would EVERYBODY like to interview Heather as she has to leave in a while! what are some things you suggest to the teachers *** Signoff: Meike (Bad link?) do you make tapes for hearing impared?(Heather) I try to help teachers make their lessons really lively and interesting by providing photos and suggestions for kids to do which encourage them to work togehter... heather-what do you suggest to the parrents, support groups? do you do role-playing with kids to see how it feels? We have some tapes and some videos but I have to admit that I don't do anything special for the hearing or visually impaired - I will think about this... *** Signoff: KIM ( (have to go)) our first grade at delmar are learning to sign so they can talk to the deaf kid in their class Would you like to know where I have been to see UNICEF at work?... yes please Is it very common with special schools for disabled children? would you like us to send you an audio book tape? When I first joined UNICEF I wnet to Nepal, then I went to Viet Nam and Mexico, then Zambia and Sri Lanka... Yes Kristi I would like to see your audio book tape... we are bringing our disabled kids back into the Salisbury schools with everyone else yes we will send you one what did you see in those places?-Heather how did you help the people there In England some disabled kids are in special schools separated from other kids, and some are at regular schools... is the signing the same in all the countries or is it different? The thing that most strikes me when I visit a country is how similar people are... How do these children feel being in a special school? is there a universal sign language? The policy in Finland is to integrate disabled children in ordinary schools. how do the teachers learn to handle them physically? UNICEF tries to help the government's of countires improve the lives of children, particularly with health care and education... back... respirators,et... Bill thinks there is an interantional *** Signoff: RobS (Bad link?) what should we do about that many are disabled because the mother takes drugs or smokes? Heather- do you educate pregnant women? *** RobS (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #kidclub Kristi, do you mean teenage mothers o health education for all women?... all women, especially women introuble (drug users) so the babies are healthy what heather does to educate pregnant women UNICEF encourages governements to help all women who are pregnant or have babies. In many African countreis UNICEgf is helping children whose paresnt havce died of AIDS... why is AIDS so wide spred in Africa? No one is sure how widespread it is... because many Africanpeople are now very well fed or healthy... they get sick, sometimes it is asumed ist is AIDS but they are not tested... do the children get AIDS from their mothers? *** Pete (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #kidclub I meant not very well fed... are the kids with AIDS considered handicapped? not very often, although it can be transmitted in breast milk... I suppose they are considered handicapped when they are actaully sick... do they have handicapped rights? but alot of the time they are healthy but they are ostracised by others... What do you think of they way people often treat handicapped people?... How do they know who togive help to? here most kids are nice to them but a handful are rude. Canb you clarify this question plesase?... If you don't know someone has a handicap (dyslexia) how can you help? Bill asked how you would define 'handicapped'?... I think it's anyone who has any disability such that they are unable to do things.. So that would include physical and mental handicaps. And also people who force handicaps on themselves. Some handicaps are easier to see than others, dyslexia is a learning disability so teachers should spot it... Rob how do you force handicap on yourself? Heather-here children with AIDS aren't identified it is kept private I have a question about ethics.. should doctors tell parents that they will have a disabled child and is that sufficient for abortion? Well I think if you don't want to work in school or if you believe that you can't do a sport, then you force that handicap on yourself -- even if you CAN possibly work or play sports. By smoking, using drugs, annoying people so much that they hit you etc. I think that the parent has the right to know unless they ask not to... regarding disability and Mikael's question. Should you be allowed to have an abortion of you know that the child have e.g. Down's syndrome? I agree with Rob sometimes the parents want to know so they can prepare themselves *** Kristi is now known as Mickey hi everyone I would interpret bringing a handicap on yourself if you have an accident - being lazy or frefusing to dio something is not a handicape that you can expect help with... Amy and Rachel say that in any case -- disability or not -- no grown parent should get an abortion, but tennagers could. I don't think that's really fair I have to go now, it was nice talking to you... (5 minute warning) thank you Heater If you send a postal address to Mike I will send you information about UNICEF, bye... Bye Heather! Is castlenau staying yes Bye! *** Heather is now known as Lukem Hi Mickey: Amy & Rachel want to know how you'd feel if you were killed before you were ever even born. Hi Luke! hey luke I'm o.k. I think I would be pretty upset It's not fair not to tell the parents the truth, but what they then decide to do is a question of moral. But the 'child' won't suffer if you get an abortion. I've been watching the discussion so i know what's going on Amy & Rachel say: that's the same thing as abortion, and if you were handicapped you'd still have feelings. just because a baby is still developing,... it doesn't mean it's not a living thing I think that the parent should know about if the child is going to be disabled so they can prepare When do you become a person? *** LaRayM (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #kidclub the new being is alive when it is concieved Whaen you are born or concived Time limit on local; be right back Of course, it wouldn't be good if everyone was perfect either... I am here in Chesterfield County, VA. (suburb out side of Richmopnd, VA. Very disappointed but only 2 students could come. bye no one is perfect it is a question of the right to end a foetus's life hi Laray Mickey: What if the doctor say that the child have 70 per cent probability to have a serious handicap. for the benefit of the parent(s) Hi! Had trouble accessing...how long has discussion been on? I would still let it live *** A-Dan (WHEELER@roll.san.uc.edu) has joined channel #kidclub hi dan Hi Dan LaRay since our noon Hi, I just dropped in to say hello. hi Dan, any kids with you But since the genetic technology is developing fast, soon you can decide what characteristics your baby will have. but would you want to? No kids here, I'm alone. Joe says--determing life is a scarey subject. I read and listen to parents and dunno how i would handle a question. Thomas: yes... I am afraid there is (black?) market for this technoloy. Are we not strong enough and powerful enough allready? Probably no. I mean, a world full of blond, tall, intelligent sex- symbols wouldn't be fun to live in. genetic tec. in the future might correct problems ... nott just find them but who wants to live in a world of superbeings, where no one is different... Or create problems... Disabilities can be quite sad but in our schools we are able to really educate and help so many now. It gibves all of us opportunities to understand more of others as well as ourselves! each person is the most intelligent and mentally... how old are you Thomas powerful as is "humanly"(?) possible I'm 13. How are your schools educating studentws with disabilities? differences make the world more interesting in our school, able-bodied work along side dis-abled I agree Mickey.... We have a blind teacher in our school. *** Signoff: A-Dan (Leaving) "Variety is the spice of life...." Jennifer asked--do you mind being in a class with a student with disabilieies? Do you mind helping? with special materials I dont mind helping Are all the students in separate classrooms or in regular one? well said Luke some kids are cruel though they can make fun of things that they don't understand I wouldn't mind helping the disabled Joe says--what do you do to help when someone is mean? I stick up for that person if someone is being mean then all you can do is challenge them... find out if they realize a persons problem not physically, but to show that you are better than that I agree; some people just don't understand.. and if they dont, which they usually dont, you can try and explain but somtimes they are scared and make them understand i wouldent mind helping a disabled child or adult !!!!!!!!!!!!!! they show it by being mean Mickey-who is scared I have to go now bye Sorry but we have to go...this has been a great first experience. I hope we can have more kids next time!!! Thanks! Bye! Bye Raine! the kids that don't understand *** Signoff: RaineA ((have to go my father is to blame for this it is all his fault bye bye bye bye bye bye)) yes ,people can be daunted by what they dont understand the only thing you can do is educate you could try to make tham friends with the handicapped... Lukem: Yes... therefore I think it is a good idea to mix disabled and enabled children. *** Signoff: LaRayM (Bad link?) but to be friends.. they have to understand that person's personal difficulty or problem Yeah, the most important thing that a disabled person needs is support. Thomas- not nessicarilly support or try to put them in their shoes spelling???? *** Pete has left channel #KIDCLUB people like to have independance But perhaps not so much support that they feel dependent. they want to do things for themselves not have them done for them they need encouragement.... not cririticism and opposition criticism *** Mickey is now known as Nada *** Thomas has left channel #KIDCLUB oops why can't I spell??? :') hi everyone hi nada thats all right Luke Ican't spell either have you been following the talk? yes *** Einstein (thsundel@bilbo.abo.fi) has joined channel #kidclub hi einstein *** Einstein is now known as Thomas Sorry... hi Thomas What do you guys think should happen in the course of regular life -- not just school -- to help disabled kids? access to the places that everyone else has *** Pete (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #kidclub How can we ensure that everyone has access? The first step for everyone would be to stop labelling them as lower- class citizens. fair treatment from the public in general... true and employers I agree: a good umbrella statement but how do we make it work? I have to go in about five minutes. *** Signoff: Pete (Leaving) It's not easy to get disabled into normal working life when unemplyment is 20 per cent or higher. again the only answer is education but it is hard to educate people that are busy with their own affairs Maybe there should be required education on these type of things before you can graduate High School. Some people just don't want to know that disabled people are also human beings and should be treated fairly. true So we should have more education about disabilites in school. I have to go.. Maybe I'll be back on but probably not... Bye! It is difficult to change ideas that have been held for a long time bye *** Signoff: RobS (Goodbye! :( Oh well.) Well, I have to go too. =( *** Signoff: Nada (Bad link?) see ya Thomas *** Signoff: Thomas (See you all next week (I hope)) We used to have a subject called "Medborgarfardighet" when I went to school.. think you could call it "Citizen knowledge". I think we should get it back to the curriculum. what did it involve How be be a good citizen. Your duties and yours rights. we have social education And how to behave in certain situations. its the same kind of thing ======================================================== ....kids chatted off topic... -------------------------------------------------------- Almost all of my kids now have internet accounts so it is possible to send e-mail directly to them. I think it is easier for them to talk via e- mail than irc because irc is too fast sometimes. do you mean bacause of their English? Luke: Yes, they have studied English only for a couple of years. they are still talking on the phone so nada went to talk to Dawn ================================================= Luke, Kelli, Kristi and Dawn continued to talk... but we ended the logfile here. The Salisbury kids called London and talked to Dawn and Mike by voice phone before the chat was over. ;-) ================================================= Patti Weeg .
