Franz, how do the students in your class feel about the public health care issue? *** BobS has left channel #kidclub In school, we have Health classes as part of our curriculum. Mike what is socail health education MikeB:Yes, but more in elementary school and middle school than high school, at least where I live Here in Finland the health care used to be free, but since we have economical problems you have to pay about 100 marks. I think that most of us here beleive it is a way for the govm't to regulate the price of health care *** BobS (bsturtz@leo.nmc.edu) has joined channel #kidclub *** Jugli is now known as johan How many marks/dollar? Mike, Thomas, do you have any way of converting 100 marks to AMerican dollars? about 5.5 marks a dollar Thomas, do you know if you have to pay 100 mk for *every* visit? how much is 100 marks in USA money about 20 $ 100 marks = ca. 550 USD oopsa a bit less wrong Educating parents is still a problem even in the UK where certain vaccines are still 'risky' in that the very young children can suffer permanent damage from the vaccine itself. ignore my numbers =) hehehe Our concern is what the health care will cost if our system becomes national. and how ggod it will be. Mike (castlenau) how is the cost in England. that doesn't happen to often over here A lot of the medicine in Europe is outlawed for use here in the US teh government only does one thing well here that is a concern here , also what's that Bob war, unfortunately. Those who have experience with government health systems in the US are terrified by the new proposals Does anyone think that our own health services should in some way be 'twinned' or linked to developing countries so as to share with them our very high standards of preventative medicine? how true Sean; isn't the European medicine good enough? What you say about 'outlawed' medicines is interesting Sean. how can we do this Mike Thomas: Some of it just hasn't been appoved by the FDA for use it would be a start but it may be to expensive for us in the usa or you in your countries BRB *** Signoff: Kristian (brb) *** Signoff: A_jamie (Leaving) What's FDA? I really don't know how my suggestion could be applied Mickey but I am troubled that the UK press is only really concerned about national issues. In what way...for the drug companies? Do you pay an amount annually for use of health care or is it totally subsidized by the government? The drug companies are very powerful I think that the quality of European drugs depends on where it's from *** WILKERSON is now known as Vanessa you see them on TV all the time Bobb Thomas: true *** MikeB is now known as Stacey Hi folks its me I'm back hi Stacey HI Hi! HI! Hi Hi *** Mickey is now known as Ann what is thge topis this week? Hi *** Franz is now known as JOANN health and education Does anyone want to talk about education? mikael in finland do you have a choice of which doctor to go to thats right! Our budget only allows for about 5 more minutes of chat time. Aaron (Franz) and I have enjoyed the depth of the discussion today. LOUISE SAYS WE DO I want to talk about education Ann: You can go to a privite doctor and then you can choose more freely... but also pay alot of money. 19:43 so a socialized health care plan doesn't let you choose a-mikael: is the service faster? We'll watch for a log of this chat, try to keep current on what's happening in Kidclub and participate more fully in December and January *** JOANN is now known as Franz a-mikael: Yes, I would think so. Especially if you need tests. mikael does everyone have the same health insurance I mean in many countries, like Canada, that have healt systems, the wait for certain kinds of procedures can be too long. a-mikael: do you ever have to wait for treatment? Sorry, I meant to BobS... Ann: Yes With a health care program are they still allowed to choose private doctors and hospitals for faster treatment ovER here we have free health-care, do any of you The Nordic health system is equal for everyone. *** Stacey is now known as MikeB Many Canadians come to the US if they want to get, sys, open-heart surgery quicky. president clinton has developed a health care plan for the usa....many people are worried that are right to choose our own doctor will be taken away BobS: People have actually died in Canada waiting to get treatment... Sean: For some operations you have to wait for several months, e.g. bypass-operations. *** MikeB is now known as Dawn a-mikael: even if you go through a private doctor? is it better to have public health care or private health care(your opinions please) BobS: If you have the money you get the service faster. O.k fill me in on who is there and what has been said please.... cos i do not know brb... We (Joann and I ) have enjoyed the chat today but money constraints limit the time we have and we have to go The private health care is better but of course it might cost quite a lot. dawn: we are talking about health care I think that the poor should get public and if you can afford it you should be able to choose *** Signoff: Franz (Leaving) brb Ann we think that is a good idea must go....bye all! Vannesa: I think that if we had a better economy in the US, public health care would be better, but right now, I'm not so sure. bye bye bobs!!!!! *** Signoff: BobS (Leaving) I agree but I don't think people should be forced to have a public helth care plan By By Most hospitals over here are going to be cosed soon closed Here in Finland, even public health care costs quite a lot if you need it often. OK do you all suggest that we should have more time to prepare for these discussions to help those people for whom English is a second language? Up to age 12...our schools don't usually have a student council Patti; just like here then do your help make school rules? no. I don't think so... No. I can speak English. I just don't know so much about student councils etc. tell me some rules you have made or have had a part inmaking... do your teachers make all the rules? They don't do any rules... The student council doesn't do ant rules ant = any I would say that the "power" is very much concentrated to the teachers room, unfortunately... *** ts (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #kidclub what does the student council do then,Linus? hi ts Hello Terry *** MikeB is now known as louise Patti; I really don't know =) Why is the power to make rules not shared by all, kids? We have a student council too bye Don't you think you are more inclined to follow a rule that you helped make? Goodbye everyone... What rules would you like to have a voice in making? *** Signoff: Daniel (Leaving) bye, Jamie! Thanks...hugs! patti:I think that the rules in my school are good... We have guite a big say as to what goes on in the school as students Patti; mabye because if the students chould decide there should not be any rules =) Bye Jamie! by by A_Jamie Bye Jamie....see you Bye Patti...hugs back to all...bye Mikael...bye MikeB. and all!!!! cu l8er well. could be true, Linus, but I think kids would soon realize that rules are really necessary. *** Signoff: A_Jamie (Leaving) I think it is vital that kids have a voice in every school as long as they use thiis voice sensibly Patti; yes.. ok, so they should be guided by adults? ..but still have a voice. *** Signoff: Lucke (Leaving) hmm... BYE lucke! Tell me some things you could have a voice in... dress code? But you short try to keep the number of rules to an absolute minimum and as uncomplicated as possible... yes, Mikael, I agree... by lucke what rules do you have right now? Which would you change? can you carry outer wear with you to class? school bags? Our kids can't.... I think that is a good odea Mikael Kristian is looking for his rulez :-) I have them all right here....hold on... hehe hhm..maybe the school bag rules has been changed. Fear of weapons was the reason for that one. We have to caarry our bags to class unless we pay for a locker! Patti; we can carry atleast our bags with us to class... oops!!! rule *has* been changed....delay here can't see what I'm typing I think lockers are free here at our school...? pay for a locker????? or just the lock itself? we used to have to pay for the lock but not anymore There are not enough lockers for everybody either! We only got them this yearr after lots of disscussion at the student council! Thomas and the rest, help me on this one... what are the rules here? I leaving now goodnight dream sweet dreams Loiuse, tell me about your student council... bye johan.... Rule nr 1: You are NOT allowed to leave the school yard 1. You aren't allowed to be late. 2. You should take your books and things with you to lessons 3. Threat others as you wish to be threated 4. Keep the schoolarea nice 5. Keep a good order in school 6. Contribute to a nice schoolmeal 7. Do not what is its purpose? BY Bye Johan! We have to pay to use a locker every term *** Signoff: johan (Leaving) are there consequences for breaking rules? I have a special method for breaking rule number one :-) what is that, Mikael? is corporal punishment allowed? Dont know if I should tell that, Thomas is a pupil of mine :-) can principals spank naughty children? ;-) no... =) One good method is to let everyone else leave a few minutes before the school clock rings but not the ones that were late. great idea, Mikael... ;-) Most of my kids ride the school bus so they can't be dismissed early. 7. Do not use alcoholics and do not smoke 8. Keep jackets and other things on the place for the purpose 10. Don't leave the schoolarea on schooltime 11. Inform if you're going to be absent 12. Between lessons keep either in or outside. 13.Do not WE do not have any kind of corporal punishment here ahhh....smoking...now even teachers cannot smoke on school property Yeaa!!!! Patti, is that true? Neither have we (I think....) yes...new law... Here the teachers have smoking rooms. Even several *NO* smoking on school grounds during school hours until 5 PM That even means visitors watching sports events! 13. Do not use bicycles or other vehicles and do not keep on the parking place 14. Do not damage person or property 15. Show respect and policy We are really getting tough on smokers... END thanks, Antii! ;-) The smokings rooms are good places to get matches for the chimstry lab. hehe why should teachers have smoking rooms...bad example! ;-) I think so too... Patti, I agree. Teachers are alowed to smoke in the stafroom only ar our school Antti, you can't ride a bike to school? * Kristian 2 Patti: I can ride bike to school, but not between lessons But the teachers must not smoke in front of the pupils. We now offer smoking clinic to teachers becasue of the new rule...withdrawal!!! Yeee..ride bike on the schoolyard during the breaks... I do not think they should be allowed to smoke anywhere double standard, Mikael...do as I say but not as I do... ;-) That is a great idea Patti! no, Anti...can't ride the bikes during the shcool day. ;-) hehe teachers can't even go to their cars and smoke if they are parked on the school property Wow! Each morning we have a morningassembly, when getting three times late, you have to stay 30 mins Fridayafternoon... =) I have never smoked so this isn't a problem but I can understand that is it very difficult for some teachers right now Kids are often caught smoking at our school My son is always getting detention for being late! ;-) I have never smoked either Is there a difference in smoking habits between girls and boys? Sadly, my 16 yr old smokes too but he is learning that it is making him cough real bad... I have heard so much about the dangers at school hmm...girls maybe don't smoke during schooltime... kids *do* sneak a cigarette in school... I know... Back in my old school there were a lot more girls than boys smoking.. What is the penalty for smoking in school? hmm...I think our school keeps the rules quite well....compared to other schools in my region... Interesting, Mikael....very sad... They will bear children some day...bad idea...to start so young...to start at all! In our school I think yu get your cigarettes taken away ans a letter to your parents Mikael, not sure of the penalty for smoking...maybe detention? My son had saturday school today for cutting class cutting class means to be missing from a lesson? yes, Mikael...I think he arrives late between classes... how much time do you have to get from one class to another? 15 minutes We have about 3 mins I think we have 4 minutes in highschool 15 minutes!!! yep that' sright wow, Linus, that's long oopsa What do you do for 15 mins??? we have no time at all! louise: Some guys go smoking... We are late, Patti Hi Louise! Written any more poems lately? Mikael...teachers are magicians! ;-) how long are your days in school then? What do the teachers say if you are late? they don't because a lot of people are Our school day is from 8 to 3 in high school... we have 9 till 3 and your day? how long? here it is from 8:20-2:30 hhm....how long is lunch? 30 mins lessons are 45 mins I have Ben,(maybe send you Some later), for now, backm on topic!! same here... 30 minutelunch morningassembly 10 mins We have an hour for lunch, not enough!!! How many 'classes' do you have in a day? six one hour, Louise??? I think the morning assemblies have very high standard (put alot of pressure on the teachers :-( ) explain mikael... assemblies every day? But then there are the morningassemblys that students presents..=) yep what do you do at these assemblies? hehe hehe Yes... and they are mostly very well prepared. we have mornign announcements all kind of stuff like what, Kristian? In the upper school all our lessons are an hour long, we have 4 a day hehehe hmm...sport quiz... |h We have assemblies here too what are those subjects, Louise? We have 7 classes a day. the usual is: Teacher says good morning, teacher read 5 minutes, teacher plays music three minutes, students fall asleep, teacher says and have a nice day and opens the door We have a different range of subjects every day Do you have religious asssemblies also? Louise, do you have those same 4 subjects all year long or do you have a different 4 in the next erm? erm = term In the upper school we choose our topics what does the teacher read, Antti? We have the same all year long hmm,... Mikael, no religious assemblies in our public schools...cannot by law. :'-( We do more than 4 subjects no prayer at all in school... sad times... Many schools (not ours) always have religious assemblies. What do you mean,Sad times It is a shame that we can't Mikael... Louis, we say in our Pledge to our flag that we are "...one nation, under God..." yet we can't acknowledge that God in school hmm...
