account about this project.  Some very interesting food choices.

<willp> people, but many still go hungry on occasions.

<Maggie> We have poor people in Salisbury who don't have enough food

<willp> Does everybody in your countries have enough to eat?

<Thomas> Almost

<WILKERSON> Students in our country that are in school and cannot afford to

purchase lunches are provided with a "free lunch" during the school year.

They may also have free breakfast.

<Raine> We have (I think............)

<Maggie> We have the Joseph House, where poor people go for food....

<willp> So the schools help kids out ?

<WILKERSON> But this is only true during the days when school is in sesion.

<WILKERSON> Yes, they help out with the students, but this does not help

adults.

<Maggie> Our class has 4 Volunteers each month who go and help serve them the

food.

<WILKERSON> There are agencies that often help over holidays...but the schools

are not in session.

<willp> So we can see that people in some 'well-off' countries also go hungry.

<willp> Why is this?

<Linus_L> Will; we got an Salvation Army that gives a meal/day to poor,

homeless peoples

<Maggie> In public schools, kids can get free breakfast and free lunch

<WILKERSON> I fear that far too often people assume that a "well-off" country

never has any poot or hungry people...

<Maggie> They can get it at summer school Also.

<WILKERSON> Yes, Linus, the Salvation Army is one of the organizations that

also helps out in our area.

<willp> Have any of you helped organizations such as the Salvation Army?

<Maggie> Linus, is there a Salvation Army in Finland?

<WILKERSON> Sometimes, the recreation centers will also provide some hot

lunches.  There is also a program called Meals on Wheels that often provides

food for the elderly and people who cannot get out to places such as the

Salvation Army.

<Malin> Lucas: U like our school-food?????

<willp> Good question Lucas and Maggie

<Thomas> I like it.

<willp> What do you consider luxury food?

<Lucas> Sometimes

<Thomas> Caviar and salmon.

<Maggie> My school, St. Francis, goes to the Joseph House, with food.

<WILKERSON> Actually, our school people prepare very good food, but I do think

it often depends on the cafeteria personnel.  Ours can make the best cinnamon

rolls in town!

<Maggie> We don't have steak very often. Too expensive

<WILKERSON> My daughter's school has a special day once a month where the

students are asked to bring an extra sandwich in their lunches (they do not

have a cafteria) and the extra sandwiches are donated to shelters for the

people who are hungry.

<Linus_L> I think that we here in Vasa, Finland got quite good school food -

for free

<Thomas> I never eat caviar, but sometimes I eat salmon.

<WILKERSON> They ask for sandwiches of meats, to provide more protein to those

who need it.

<Maggie> I usually pack my lunch, don't eat school food.

<SeanK> Over here, salmon's not so much of a luxury food because it's caught

right off the coast

pizza at least twice a week.

<Krisse> we never get pizza here (in our school)

<SeanK> We can buy pizza hut pizza twice a week at our school for 1.50 a slice

(!)

<WILKERSON> That is because it is so popular with the students. They may also

choose to eat salads...

<Thomas> I also like fish- and chickenburgers.

<Maggie> My family rarely eat meals togeter, don't have the same schedules.

<WILKERSON> At my daughter's school, they bring in hot lunches twice a week

with variety as to the foods...one day pizza, another time tacos, another time

stuffed potatoes, another time roast beef...

<Thomas> We mostly eat at the same time.

watch the Swedish television.

want to eat at certain places because it would be "cool" to be there with

their friends.

<Maggie> For us food is mostly advertised as "really Healthy"

<Craig> I'm from Des Moines, it is south of Seattle

<WILKERSON> Grocery stores will often show foods to buy because they are

healthy, etc..

<WILKERSON> But the fast food advertisements are to encourage you to come to

their places and then eat their foods.

<WILKERSON> Sometimes, but the ads generally run toward the idea of

hamburgers, french fries, and cola drinks...

<Thomas> No, but people eat it anyway, probably because it tastes good.

<Craig> At my age, I don't worry about my health very much, so I eat lots of

fast food.

<Maggie> I don't think fast food is very healthy, but I think they are trying

to take alot of fat and stuff out so it can be healthyer.

<WILKERSON> It is sad that many of the students in my school will bring cola

drinks for lunch and pour out the milk that comes with the meal.

<Lucas> What cost a pizza in USA

<Craig> I like the milk

<WILKERSON> At school or in public, Lucas?

<Thomas> Vegetables.

<willp> why is it healthy?

<Lucas> public

<WILKERSON> At school, pizza is $1.00 (American) but this is just for one

slice and vegetables.

<Maggie> Low in fat, has fiber in it, fruits, vegetables ect...

<Thomas> Probably because i don't like it...

<WILKERSON> If you go to buy a pizza in a restaurant, expect to spend between

$8.00 and $15.00 depending on the size and toppings (American money, of

course)

<willp> have eating habits changed in recent times?

<WILKERSON> I would say that in our area of the south, the eating habits have

changed drastically in the last 10 years...

<Craig> Yes, they have.  There has been a health food craze over here in

Seattle.

<Maggie> I think think eating habits for myself are horrible

<WILKERSON> Many people spend more time eating out than eating at

home...<grin, I must also admit to this>

<Craig> Me too

<WILKERSON> But I do try to find places that offer choices...

<willp> what ever happened to good old home-cooking? =)

<Thomas> We try to eat healthy food because my father isn't allowed to eat so

much sugar, fat or salt. It's good for all the others too.

<Craig> Good old home-cooking is now a TV dinner at my house

<WILKERSON> Even the "Kentucky Fried Chicken" now has a choice of vegetables

from cooked apples, lima beans, green beans, rice, potatoes, corn, etc...and

it is all pretty good at our local place.
