+ water so important?

<LouiseA> water makes up 2 thirds of our body

<ann> becaue it keeps us alive

<alison> water is important so we do not dehydrate

<MB> I found that out

<Raine> Because it is importent for basic functions in a human body

<LouiseA> we would die after 2 to 3 days without it

<ann> 97% of the earth is water....I think

<MB> I just ate a whole bunch of salt

<MB> 60% of us is water too, I beleive

<alison> water provides a wonderful means of recreation.

<ann> it helps us stay cool

<Rachel> we need water to keep up our energy

<alison> This summer we didn't have enough rain and therefore, we do not have as many crops as we would normally have, Corn was especially hurt.

<LouiseA> The countries which have the most water seem to waste it the most-we are terrible in England

<willp> but sometimes the UK and USA suffer droughts as well. What do people do in a drought to get and conserve water?

<Rachel> it's been raining alot here

<LouiseA> in develped countries we take fresh water for granted

<alison> along the mississippi river we had a terrible flood

<ann> in Africa people don't know how to farm so their land turns into desert....it makes it very dry

<willp> The opposite of a drought is of course a flood. A major flood occurred in the USA. How did this effect people's lives?

<LouiseA> it is so easy to turn on a tap

<Rachel> it kills many people and recks homes

<kim> I don't know because i live in Finland

<MB> peoples houses suffered major damage and is costing

<LouiseA> in africa they can"t farm because it doesn't rain enough

<ann> in Africa they don't have ways to store water

<Rachel> I live in the usa but I wasn't anywhere near the flood!

<willp> In Sudan, over one million people were made homeless...

<willp> In Bangladesh, 50% of the families lost their only means of subsistence - farmland....

<alison> we have never had a serious flood but we have high tides that also destroys properties because we are right by the water

<LouiseA> we are studying natural disasters in geography

<willp> Jamaica relies alot on the tourist industry. Since the flood it is still trying to recover

<alison> We are also in the hurricane path if hurricanes come up the east

+ coast of the USA.

<willp> How did people survive these floods? Well, foreign aid and the work...

<Raine> HERE IN FINLAND WE DON'T HAVE HURRICANES

<willp> they have to live in temporary camps. These camps are very crowded...

<willp> Yes MB. So Unicef provides vaccinations against several diseases...

<willp> such as polio, measles, and tetanus

<MB> but still there are some that get around

<LouiseA> dirty water aids the spread of disease suchas cholera and typhoid

<willp> Yes Alison. Crowding is a problem. Unicef helps provide accommodation...

<LouiseA> here we have been vaccinated against almost all of thoses diseases

<alison> a disaese that can get into open wouns, tetanus

<willp> Yes LouiseA. Water pollution is another problem, Unicef provides

+ clean water supplies

<MB> the rain forest is 2% of the world but has more the half of the worlds animals and plant life.

<willp> Rainforest is certainly an important resource. MB is right in....

<willp> talking about species diversity: over two third's of the world's

+ species are supported by rainforest environments

<MB> for every square mile we cut down, we are cause a few speicies to become

+ extinct

<ann> when the trees in the rainforest are cut down..tremendous amounts of

+ carbon dioxide are released

<ann> this causes holes in the ozone

<willp> Rainforests also contribute to the hydrologic cycle - recycling water

<Rachel> I live by a lot of forests in MI

<MB> also styrofoam relaeses particals that hurt the ozone

<Rachel> we breathe better here!

<ann> they produce lots of oxygen

<MB> when the styrofoam is broken

<LouiseA> trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen-we do the opposite
