I am ready to discuss so wath *** Keith is now known as ann hi ann where are you willp hi ann Ok everybody. The first question I'd like an answer to is why is + water so important? water makes up 2 thirds of our body becaue it keeps us alive water is important so we do not dehydrate I found that out Because it is importent for basic functions in a human body we would die after 2 to 3 days without it 97% of the earth is water....I think I just ate a whole bunch of salt 60% of us is water too, I beleive water provides a wonderful means of recreation. like swimming louisea: thats true wow-97% that sounds like a little much to us it helps us stay cool we need water to keep up our energy its fun too under water world is very beutifull we use it to wash ourself's off also i agree with rachel Me too Raine washing is important for helping to stop the spread of illness I like underwater..went scuba diving, it was awasome we also need water to keep plants alive... they give off oxygen I have never been to scuba dive we would all starve without water Some good answers. But where does water come from? And where does it go to? I agree with Rachel rachel i think you are genius This summer we didn't have enough rain and therefore, we do not have as many crops as we would normally have, Corn was especially hurt. I've snorkled before! it comes from the earth ....then it evaporates and then it rains most of the water we use comes from resovoirs which fill fron rain we had our drout a few weeks ago ??????????????????????????????????????? I dont have a clue i love to go kneeboarding i haven't snorkled all the grass turned brown What is kneeboarding I like to go swimming!!!!!!!! me too me too You're right Ann answer me alison africa hasa real drought!!!! people waste water daily they wast to much ann that's true has anyone ever read magical schoolbus and the watrworks. and they pollute alot I try to not waste as much water In what ways do you think people waste water? The countries which have the most water seem to waste it the most-we are terrible in England taking long showers!!! TO ware guns people leave the water running while washing their hair, and brushing their teeth while people brush their teeth they let the water run leavint the tap running when they wash Soory i ment to water guns and watering their grass in the middle of the day raine, kneeboarding isbeing pulled by a boat on a smaller surfboard here in finland we don't water our grass we need to sometimes LouiseA mentioned that some parts of Africa are suffering a drought.... why don,t you need to people water their gtass alot here in the summer it rains alot here, alison but sometimes the UK and USA suffer droughts as well. What do people do in a drought to get and conserve water? it's been raining alot here in develped countries we take fresh water for granted along the mississippi river we had a terrible flood in Africa people don't know how to farm so their land turns into desert....it makes it very dry no it doesent that flood was afful The opposite of a drought is of course a flood. A major flood occurred in the USA. How did this effect people's lives? it is so easy to turn on a tap yes it was! it kills many people and recks homes I don't know because i live in Finland peoples houses suffered major damage and is costing in africa they can"t farm because it doesn't rain enough in Africa they don't have ways to store water Have a guess Kim! millions to repair all of the damage Many houses where destroyed i can't,willp the people in mississippi are still recooperating I live in the usa but I wasn't anywhere near the flood! Wha else was damaged? alison is that true peoples lives property, crops (i think) neither was i, kim Good thinking MB. is whattrue the real problem is no water, not where to store it, though it is true + they do not have sufficient technology most of the farmland was destoyed...that's where most of our crops come + from Califonia suffers many drought Ann weere you effected by the flood? droughts Can anyone name any other major floods, where and when they occurred? now there is no drinking water...it's polluted do you have a food problem now? bagledesh no, not me no, allison where are you ann here in finland we never suffer from drought salisbury sorry0Bangledesh we don't either in sweeden 2 month's ago In 1988, major floods hit Sudan, Bangladesh, and Jamaica... In Sudan, over one million people were made homeless... st louis missouri...a few years back thats awful That's terrible willp what about hurricanes..they take water and can cause major destruction whole houses were under water imagine what that would be like! Yikes! what now In Bangladesh, 50% of the families lost their only means of subsistence - farmland.... i agree with raine we have never had a serious flood but we have high tides that also destroys properties because we are right by the water that's sad how did they survive...who helped them we are studying natural disasters in geography 50 % noooo!!!!!! that is alot we have a massive flood barrier here in london wow yes it is Jamaica relies alot on the tourist industry. Since the flood it is still trying to recover london is slowly sinking what is a flood barrier? HUH? We are also in the hurricane path if hurricanes come up the east + coast of the USA. we are not we are definatly not! How did people survive these floods? Well, foreign aid and the work... the barrier rises in high tides Rob, Eric and I are too far inland for most hurricanes along the cost HERE IN FINLAND WE DON'T HAVE HURRICANES of organizations like Unicef helped. Imagine Hawaii what did unicef do here Good question. When people become refugees... we give food for the children they have to live in temporary camps. These camps are very crowded... oops we give money for the children countries supply money What do you think are the problems in these camps? illness crowding we have learnt about the after affects of floooding...... What are you talking about did i miss somthing Yes MB. So Unicef provides vaccinations against several diseases... such as polio, measles, and tetanus but still there are some that get around What is tetanus dirty water aids the spread of disease suchas cholera and typhoid Yes Alison. Crowding is a problem. Unicef helps provide accommodation... what abouyt the flu? the small space here we have been vaccinated against almost all of thoses diseases a disaese that can get into open wouns, tetanus we are so lucky Yes LouiseA. Water pollution is another problem, Unicef provides + clean water supplies I know, we are lucky we can afford those things...such as how do they do that willp Ok. Natural disasters can affect water. What else can cuase problems + with water? do unicef help, with health care space, health care and food sewage lack of water leaaaaaaaves peoplewith out a way to bath, and without + a bath I feel grouchy *** Signoff: MB (Bad link?) I agree with MB industrial pollution causes acid rain the Chesapeake Bay is poluted..that afects our food suply...oysters, + crabs, clams Excellent folks, you're all on the ball! Me to there is not a good crab crop this yaer Is it not Ok so there are many problems in developing countries but.... *** MB (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #kidclub Hi again there are also many problems at home as well. welcome back like wath What types of pollution occur? (Hi MB) car, truck sewage thermal, nuclear...etc chemicals for claening sulphuric acid falls with rain air basicly Yes Rachel Yes Alison WATER noise pollution I have only ten minutes time then i have to go fertilizer runoff it kills off trees and dissolves imoportanr historic monuments pesticides Str|mberg Alison that's an important point. What could be done to stop run-off? acid rain comes from our polluted water increase in amount of cancer here has been linked to pesticides *** Signoff: MB (Bad link?) ann, very true in Traverse City, and Leelauna County use less fertilizer Why are fertilizers needed in the first place? or use naturalfertilizer use organic fertilizer...ones without chemicals we thought that acid rain was caused by pollutant gases from + factories etc cow dung fertillizers are needed to help crops grow and keep bugs off to enhance our soil to increase the amount of yield bye (I have to go now) But the prices of crops would go up if we used organic fertilizers. i have to go i had fun without it large populations could go hungry *** MB (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #kidclub *** Signoff: alison (Leaving) but if everything becomes polluted we won't have any crops maybe the extra money is worth it!!! Yes has anyone heard about cows milk being helped with hormones to increase production of milk? But some governments don't have the extra money (like mine) you can use manure..that's not expensive louise k has heard of that that's true.. apparently these hormones fatten the animals up both things it causes side affects on humans, especially humans I'm back I mean children what side effects I'm back hello again early developement glad to see you both Good point LouiseA and Ann. But how do you persuade farmers to change... Kims mother and Raines father is alo thank you mb also here... Money will always work isn't the destruction of a planet perrsuassion enough! from using pesticides and industrial fertilizers to natural pest-control + and natural fertilizers. some people don't relize that talkto the dept. of agriculture...get those people involved I would prefer to eat organically grown food good idea But do people really think that LouiseA? Many people think only about... we live in a rural area so do I sorta the present, not about the future. And where is all the evidence that... raine say hello to your dad V What is rural area the world is being destroyed? most people don't know the alternatives..inform them and they'll change Heeloo people shuld think of the next generations loss of rainforests, animals species raine, farmland perrsuassion must come with information farm land area where there is a lot of farmland, few buildings, and little pollution-in some places They say that rainforrest is worlds lungs it is true I agree i agree evidence that the world is being destroyed is all around us.... show them the difference between organically grown and chemically grown food the rain forest is 2% of the world but has more the half of the worlds animals and plant life. Is that true MB wow worlds=world's the hole in the ozone layer is scientificall proven! mb how do you know that science class last year Rainforest is certainly an important resource. MB is right in.... and some news and the backs of cereal boxes they are still unsure the rainforest helps us breath I agree with willp talking about species diversity: over two third's of the world's + species are supported by rainforest environments willp thats true some people live entirely off the fotests for every square mile we cut down, we are cause a few speicies to become + extinct when the trees in the rainforest are cut down..tremendous amounts of + carbon dioxide are released sorry-forests this causes holes in the ozone Rainforests also contribute to the hydrologic cycle - recycling water I live by a lot of forests in MI also styrofoam relaeses particals that hurt the ozone we breathe better here! they produce lots of oxygen when the styrofoam is broken trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen-we do the opposite will, didn't you go to the rainforests? there is a new kind of styrafome that can be put in water. then you + shake up the water, then it disappears tell us about it and destroying old aircondistioers and heaters without taking out the + chemical inside also hurts the ozone this cycle cannot take place efficiently if the number of trees is + decreased too much That's right Ann. I have worked in the rainforests of the South Pacific air conditioners release freon this styrafome is supposed to help the enviroment that is it! freon tell us what you saw what is freon willp is there any realistic posabilitis that the rainforests can be + saved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! freon is toxic Despite the news of rainforest destruction in Central and South America a chemical that makes air conditioners work needs to be removed profvessionaly freon is a chemical gas and it's toxic the rainforests of the South Pacific are under greater threat. Why do + you think that is? so it can be stored and doesn't hurt the ozoner oops-ozone because people need farmland? people are GREEDY because we are running out of resources they need the wood they want MOOLA grrediness is behind most of the worlds problems who what Well, these are good points. The tropical rainforests of the South Pacific... IT stayes in the lungs ( i meen freon ) who what when where and why? never mind I don't no *** ann is now known as Keith What are you doing Kim rae among the most threatened in the world because they grow on small islands. Destroy a small part of the island.... Hi keith we just ate homemae blueberry muffins and you destroy the whole island and all that lives on it yummy that is terrible(the islands) how do you destroy the whole island where do you live rachel I live in Traverse City, Michigan, USA Rainforests are like 'living organisms'. Each tree and plant is linked. i see *** Signoff: LouiseA (Bad link?) I very much agree with you will with others through a series of food chains and nutrient cycles... mb were do you live Rockville Maryland I go to Redland Middle insects and animals (and humans) need *all* these chains and cycles.... Rain forests are very important to our life, from keith bye bye everyone other wise, if one dies the whole chain is upseted intact if the rainforest as a whole is to function (bye KIM) goodbye kim bye kim That's right MB bye kim *** Signoff: kim (Leaving) bye kim Maggie is here Will Hi Maggie hi maggie Maggie says HI to everyone hi maggie Hi maggie Ok. So rainforest destruction, ozone depletion, and water pollution can affect our water supplies. yep Maggie has been here for a while *** MikeB (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #Kidclub *** kids.ccit.duq.edu : Saturday October 9 1993 -- 14:19 -05:00 if say the grasshopper dies out, then birds and spiders (and some others) + have less food to eat. hello mike How can we clean water? *** MikeB is now known as Dawn BOILING WATER CLEANS IT not all the time it just kills disease WE can stop throwing trash inthe water What else? We can add chemicals MB name some diseases... not throw back dead fish and stuff into the water. Cholera Dawn, what else? flu Typhoid do some body know what kind of drinking water there is in the united + states of amerika I am not good with this Dysdntry Most drinking water is good Diorrhea I get my water from a well, it is fine same here Some of our water is rusty oters have wells the rust comes from th pipes if they are metal Wehave pretty god drinking water here sometimes it comes fr om the water We get water from taps which has chlorine and floride in yeh, my friends water has big chuncks of rust in it Some other water as a lot of chemicals in it, eeeewwww the rust comes off his pipes, he has water filters though Right on Rachel Ok. So boiling, sterilizing, anything else? Do people get ill from drinking rusty water filtering Yep MB! chemical treatment Sometimes if it is really bad there are some very good water filters out, such as Breta, which my friend + has But we don't drink rustywater. Does anybody know how people cope in situations where manufactured + filters are not available? mb, is that the same friends with the chunky water? yep I don't no You can buy filtered paper it is only one, I forgot the ' They try to go to freshwater streams Soil and gravel are very good substances with which to filter water. Leaving water in sunlight is also a useful way of killing most germs. but sometimes you still should filter it or strain it first I did not know that What connection is there between soil, rainforests, and water? me neither or me yes but sometimes soil and gravel can hurt the water now well if you take it from a stream, you could have rocks or leaves in it Its a sort of chain Go on Dawn... You area einstein It rains the moist goes into the soil, and then the water evaporates to form clouds again and what happens in forests are not there? we're dead THat's true MB but you can always take them out. The soil washesaway I hope not Rachel! yeh, sometimes they are small and you don't se them scary thiught huh?! i mean thought brb Yes Dawn. OK. What connection is there between, soil, rainforests, water and marine resources? Rachel's right if we don't have rain forests we would die Sorry i don't know rain forests need clean water to live on *** RobS (irc@kids.ccit.duq.edu) has joined channel #kidclub *** Mode change "+o RobS" on channel #KIDCLUB by Recorder *** kids.ccit.duq.edu : Saturday October 9 1993 -- 14:31 -05:00 Hi! and the water moistens the soil If woulden't have water we would die So does marine resourcses same with the rainforests talking bout water and rain forests Soil run-off from areas of land where forests are no longer growing... I don't know Will whats the answer please Hi Salisbury! Yes Will clogs up estuaries and rivers. As a result, fish and other marine life... die as unpleasant as it seams it is true suffers. This in turn means that our food resources (fish) are reduced. uhoh :( ??? There are other animals that live on marine life and not just us Raine: that fish are "reduced..." when the fish die we will start eating the birds Time for a break everyone? The food chain is efected YES Yes but we already eat birds and it will still cut down on resources it boils down to that dawn yes Anyway some birds eat fish yes, we'd like to just talk to everybody for a bit before we leave. *** THE GROUPS CONTINUE WITH MISCELLANEOUS CHAT AND LEAVE *** .
