Delos: No Man is an Island

Dear Kids:

I think this "Name Game" is really cool. This is especially true because I have a rather unusual name: Delos

Throughout my life, the questions most asked of me have been, "Why were you named Delos?" and, "What does Delos mean?" The first question has always been easy to answer, "Delos is an island in Greece." The second questions has been more difficult.

On Friday, June 6, 1997, I was given the opportunity to visit that island in Greece and there I discovered that, while geographically correct, my answer was far from complete. I, also, learned the origin and meaning of the name. All in all, not a bad day.

I have always been painfully shy about my name. I really believe that, in some ways, it held me back when I was younger. I received mail addressed to Miss Delos Johnson and Ms. Delores Johnson or just plain, Dear Ms. Johnson. This can cause problems for a teenage boy's ego. The other thing that has always (even to this day) caused problems is the question of the proper pronunciation of Delos. I surveyed all the Delos's I could find and asked them how they pronounced the name and the results came back:

deeLos
deLas
deL os
da las
day los

This gave me pause. My name is gender questionable and unpronounceable! Well the trip to Delos straightened me out on the correct way to speak the name: deelos (like de'los).
