Heading Back to the Ice

For a long winter stay...

Hi Tessa,

I enjoyed my trip to the school, and watching the news. I was on channel 47 and 16. I think both channels did a very good job of reporting on our project. It is going to be a long time before I come back to the school. I am leaving Wednesday January 10 to return to the ice. I will be there through the winter, which will be your summer here. There is no way to come home from the end of February until late August. I will probably not be returning until November. It is going to be a very long cold dark winter.

Thanks for writing,
Dave

Hi Kristen,

I enjoyed my trip to the school, and getting on TV. I am sorry Kaley was sick, but I bet she enjoyed getting the autographs.

Thanks for writing,
Dave

Hi Kaley,

I am sorry you where sick. I hope you are now feeling better. I think it was very nice that Kristen got some autographs for you. It is OK that you have not written, I will be available for a long while. I am returning to Antarctica on January 10, and will still be there next fall when you are in the next grade. I went to the DZ with my son Zac when it was new. It was so crowded we did not stay. Zac has been back since to play. We do not go there a lot, but I am too big to play there anyhow.

Thanks for writing,
Dave

Hi Andrew,

I enjoyed my trip to the school, but it was so busy that I did not get to spend time with all the kids. I will be leaving for Antarctica on January 10. I should arrive in McMurdo on January 14. Zac told me that he met you, and is planning on writing to you. I told him you said hi.

Thanks for writing,
Dave

Hi Heather,

When I arrive back in McMurdo, the ice cutter will probably be working its way into the harbor. It takes several days to get from the edge of the ice sheet into the harbor. It is a big event, because the supply ship will be soon coming into the harbor. We then get new stocks of stuff in the store. Once the ice is broken, I will probably see penguins and whales. From talking with folks that have been there before, and photographs I have seen, the most common penguins will be Adelies and the most common whales will be Killer whales. The Adelie penguins are not the largest. I believe they are about 18 inches tall. The killer whales are like Willy in the Free Willy movie. I will be sure to write all the kids as soon as I see any whales or penguins.

Thanks for writing,
Dave
