Plants on Icy Planets?

Students in Australia ask

To Dave,

Our class is studying the problems associated with settling people on Mars.

We would like to know if plants can grow on icey planets because we are studying Space.

Can you grow plants in Antarctica?

Do you know any plants that could grow on Mars? There is water frozen on Mars. Where it is warm, there is no water we think.

Hello,

I do not know about Mars, but all we have here is ice, snow, and volcanic rock. Nothing grows here. We do have a hydroponic greenhouse for growing fresh vegetables. The Antarctic Treaty prohibits introduction of foreign species, including plants, but they do allow the growing of plants indoors for food.
