Dave is back on the ice!

Just before Dave returned to McMurdo I met him and his son, Zac, to return some photos. They smiled for my camera one last time until Dave returns to Snow Hill next fall.

Hi All,

I am back on the ice, and things are happening. This is a very busy season for McMurdo. While I was gone for the holidays, a US Coast Guard Ice Breaker cut a channel into the harbor. The ice is still there, just pushed around in spots.

This was enough for the NSF ship Nathaniel B. Palmer to come into the harbor last night about midnight. I watched it as it cut the ice around Hut Point, and into the harbor. It moved very slowly, and would rock forward and back as it cut the ice.

I should be going on a helicopter ride to Black Island tomorrow for work on the TDRS link site there. Next week I should be going on the overnight survival school trip on the Ross Ice Shelf. Also watch for pictures. Matt Nelson who works with me, bought a digital camera as a new toy. Matt took pictures of the NBP ship as it cut into the harbor. I will send the pictures along later this evening.
