The Ark and the Dove

Ashely R and Ashley W

The Ark and the Dove brought the first settlers to Maryland. They landed in St. Clement's Island later named Blackistone on March 25, 1634. People are now celebrating this day as "Maryland Day".

I looked into two different sources and found out that there is a difference of opinion on how much the Ark and the Dove weigh, so I will put both of them. The Ark weighed 360 - 400 tons and was 72 feet long. The Dove weighed 40 - 60 tons and was 42 feet long.

The Ark was said to be twice the size as the Mayflower and could carry over 100 passengers. People today cannot find out how much passengers the Dove could carry.

When the two ships, The Ark and the Dove, were ready to leave there were 200 carefully selected people on each ship. Right after they had left there was a terrible storm and the Dove was disappeared. Everyone on the Ark were so scared, they knew that the ship had sunk. The conditions on the ship meant only a few people had cabins. So most of the people had to live and eat with people they had never even met.

The ships reached land on the date of January 3, 1634 - 42 days after they had left England. First they stopped at Barbados in the West Indies. The people were very amazed to see what they saw. They saw many beautiful things like all of the fruit, vegetables, and the animals. They had never seen these animals before in their lives. On February 24, 1634 they stopped in Virginia. There they were treated kindly by the governor and were given supplies.

When the Dove got lost the captain decided to go back to England until the storm passed. When the storm was over they continued their voyage. Together the Ark and the Dove sailed to Maryland. On February 24, 1634 they stopped at Virginia. On the date of March 5, 1643 They entered the Potomac River and on March 25th they landed on St. Clement's Island. Then they set sail for Maryland. The town of St. Marys developed into the first Maryland county.
