Student Comments About Local Life

From Tessa Newhouse:

1) I think it would be cool to live 125 years ago, and to wear old clothes, andeat homecooked meals every night. I think that my life would be a lotdifferent.

2) Yes, I think that Caroline Pritchett or anybody's life would change if JohnHenry or anybody freed their slaves.

3) The best way to travel would be by water because no footprints are left, andyour scent is washed away.

Tessa Newhouse

Quinnisha Smith:

It would be very interesting to live like they lived.

She might have been mad because back then slaves were considered property.

They took hunting dogs and horses with them and the dogs were trained to attack[colored] people.

From Ashley Rowbottom:

1) I think it would be hard to live back then, but I could live through it. Iwould not have any slaves because I do not believe in that kind of stuff. Ithink it would be the same because I would have the same mom and family. Istill would be the same, but have to wear dresses all the time and I would notlike that.

2) I think her life changed because she has to do more stuff now that theslaves are gone.

3) The best travel would be by water because it would be cooler down by thewater and there wasn't that many roads and the fastest way was the water.

Ashley Rowbottom

From Ashley:

1. I think it would have been very interesting to have lived 125 yearsago because there weren't TV's, raido's, CD players, computers, sega's, oraircondtioners then and you would do other stuff that made people moreintelligent.

2. Caroline Pritchett's life probably changed because now she had to do allthe work.

3. I think it would be best to travel by water because it might have beeneasier , ships could carry more people, and you wouldn't be able to crossthe Chesapeake Bay without a bridge.

Ashley Adkins

From Amanda Tillman:

1) My life would definitely be different. I love modern technology.Computers, radios, CD's, CD players, T.V. (most missed) microwaves, stoves andthings like that. My one brother hates to read and doesn't do much work. My momwould love it. She could still teach and read books in her spare time, like shedoes now. My other brother, Spencer, would still be able to run and play, and Iwould be fine. Because I would still have school and my friends. The thing wewould hate though is NO AIR CONDITIONER. Especially when it is hot like is hasbeen this week.

2) She had to do her own work. She had to learn all the stuff that her slavesdid for her . That would be a hard change for me, but I would be able tomake it.

3) I think that it would be to best to travel by water, because it wouldbe easier. If you went by car the other army could hear you coming orsomethinglike that. On the water you could sneak up on the enemies!

Amanda Tillman

From Leslie Dyson:

1) I think it would be hard to live 125 years ago. You had to make your ownclothes. You would have to do more work. I think it is different for all ofthose reasons but what would be the same is I always help my mom and dad withand sometimes I help my dad out in the yard.

2) I think Caroline Pritchett's life changed because she was not use tosewing and doing the work and before her husband died he freed the slaves soshe had to do all the work herself. She didn't have a choice.

3) The best way to travel was by water because the roads were not very goodand it was easier by water.

From Olya:

1. Life at that time was quite different. People had differenthouses, clothes, there were different laws and behaviour rules, there was class inequality (slaves and slave-holders).

2. That woman lost beloved man and of course, her life wasabruptly changed. I think she had many trials, she became strongerafter that.

3. I think it was easiest way because it spend a little time, shipscould carry many people.

Well, hope I haven't a lot of mistakes in this letter, ;),
Best wishes and love,
Olya
