Twenty Tosses

Title : Twenty Tosses

Curriculum Connection:
Unit on probability

Materials Needed:
Classroom computer, coins, data collection sheets (individual tally sheets with predictions, group tally sheets, one large poster size collection sheet for class totals)

Classroom Collaboration:
Prearranged classroom teams of 4 with assigned roles

Online Collaboration:
The website posts the results for all participating classes.

Lesson:

  1. Students work in assigned groups to collect individual results of tossing a coin twenty times.
  2. Each student predicts how many heads or tails they might get if they toss a coin twenty times.
  3. Students toss coin and record individual results on data collection tally sheets.
  4. Students compare their results to their predictions.
  5. Resource manager adds group totals to class totals.
  6. Teacher or resource manager records class totals on the Twenty Tosses website.
Evaluation:
Completed data collection sheets for individuals and teams.
